Innocent man jailed

Cornelius Dupree Jr. was released from a Texas prison today after spending more than 30 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. In 1979 he was arrested and jailed for the crime of rape and robbery of a 26 year old women at gun point. During his jail stay in Texas he appealed this conviction 3 times with no success in this. An attorney from the Innocence Project took on his case. This attorney found out there was a DNA sample of this case that was never tested. She had this tested and it was found out that he was not the person who commited the crime. A Dallas Judge overturned his conviction right after. The Dallas Dist. Attorney stated in a news release that they have overturned 41 convicted crimes since 2001, when they started testing DNA samples taken as evidence in these crimes. Nina Morisan from the Projects stated that she will be working on reviewing several other cases where DNA testing was not avaliable at the time.

It is too bad that he wasted 30 years of his life in jail. Although they are going to give him 2 million dollars as a settle ment I would rather live free. It is a good thing that they are checking the older cases by pulling the DNA evidence and testing it. It makes you wonder how many people are innocent that are still in prison. What happened to Due Process and letting 99 gulity men go free than putting 1 innocent man in jail.
